    LCD and CRT Monitors

Liquid Crystal Display monitors or LCD monitors are edging out the old Cathode Ray Tube screens or CRT and produce far better display in most of the applications. There are a number of advantages that LDC screen have over the DRT displays. LCD screens are compact and lightweight and are economical when it comes to power consumption. It uses about 20W whereas the bulky CRT monitors consume a whopping 150W. While the LCD screens display perfect sharp images with high quality image geometry, in case of CRT the sharpness is limited and gets blur at high brightness. With the aging of tubes the CRT monitors suffer from geometric distortions.

LCD screens display text with superior contrast than TFT as they have a consistent tonal scale. CRT monitors, on the other hand, display strong bright areas which can cause other parts of the picture to dim. Due to limited bandwidth, CRT monitors have poor text contrast. CRT monitors always flicker slightly whereas the LCD screens usually do not flicker.
One of the disadvantages with the LCD monitors is that the contrast or the color changes with the viewing angle whereas CRT monitors display consistent image, regardless of the viewing angle. When it comes to motion and dark images, LCD screens fare poorly whereas CRT monitors portray motion well and also have good black contrast.

Photos and videos appear flat on a LCD screen and the peak brightness is limited by the back light whereas in case of CRT monitors photos and videos are displayed with a sparkle and life to images with very high peak brightness. Damaged LCD screens may develop stuck pixels whereas CRT is free from pixel based problems.

The natural interface would be digital in case of LCD monitors and whiles CRT monitors are suited to analog interface.
Due to the superior image quality, LCD screens are preferable for technical or CAD application and office uses such as large, detailed text-based but non-critical color graphics but when it comes to high-end photography or art work and television display, CRT monitors are way ahead.

CRT monitors consistently displays the light through coated phosphors. LCD screens on the other hand take while light and filter it to get the desired colors. To perform this there are three sub pixel – for Red, Green, and Blue light- for each pixel. If the sub-pixel is off the filter blocks that color of the light and if it is on, it will open the filter to let the light through.
